Description

Born in Millerton, Pennsylvania, Tate Foley currently lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri, where he is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art in the Department of Art, Design, and Visual Culture at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his BA in Studio Art from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 2007 and his MFA in Printmaking from Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia in 2010.

Tate Foley creates art that distorts and twists the expected relationships between pictures and text.  His colorful images draw the viewer in, then force them to confront a darker meaning behind what was at first something familiar. He states, “I’m kept inspired by the failings of society, politics, and the economy. Once these three entities stop screwing up, I’ll put the cap back on my marker.”

Foley’s paintcuts are created through a process of layering acrylic paint and carving through it with woodcut tools to reveal the colors underneath. Each piece is a one of a kind work of art that takes months to complete. A video of the paincut process can be seen here: http://www.tatefoley.com/paintcuts.htm and you can learn more about Foley here: http://www.tatemillerton.com/.
