Description

This open edition photograph from Danny Ghitis’ Harlem Valley series depicts a horse captured in unique and disorienting light. It comes in a simple blond wood frame.

Danny Ghitis is a Brooklyn-based photographer specializing in social documentary and portraiture work. Born in Cali, Colombia, his family moved to the United States when he was four-years-old. He graduated from the University of Florida in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, and currently works as a freelance photojournalist for a variety of clients, including The New York Times.

His photography of the Harlem Valley region in eastern Dutchess County, New York began during his artist residency at the Wassaic Project. In a rural area only two hours from New York City,  he explores the conflict between the proximity to the bussel of city life and the slow pace of the small towns. As a trained photojournalist, Ghitis always tries to negotiate his preconceptions and summon some objectivity. However, he acknowledges that his images of Harlem Valley aren’t intended to provide information that “tells it like it is”.  Instead, Ghitis states, the images, “are not only visual consequences of Harlem Valley’s history, but also represent its complex present existence and many potential futures.”
